Interventional Radiology
Dr. Mathew Cherian started the department of interventional radiology in 1991 when there are hardly any such departments in the country. Over the last three decades, the department has grown into a center of excellence.
It is the only interventional radiology department in a private hospital in this country with two angiography suites. The center performs about 2900 procedures every year and is a center for training.
Dr. Mathew Cherian was the founding member and past president of the Indian society of vascular and interventional radiology and the current president of the society of therapeutic neuro intervention. He is also the medical advisor for Boston Scientific Corporation (USA), Striker(USA), Medtronic Corporation(USA), Meril India and InspireMD (Israel).
He received the ISVIR Gold medal for outstanding contribution to the field of interventional radiology in India and the lifetime achievement award from the IMA.
Biography
Dr. Mathew Cherian passed his MBBS from the MKCG Medical College, Berhampur in 1984 and was ranked third in the university. He then spent time as a resident doctor at the railway hospital, Perambur where he learned the basics of angiography in 1985. Following this, he did his post-graduation in JIPMER, Pondicherry where he was instrumental in starting angiography and basics interventional radiology procedures. He passed out with a university gold medal and did his post-doctor certificate in interventional radiology at the Shree Chitra Thirunal Institute, Trivandrum in 1990. He was awarded a fellowship from the Critical Care Society in 2020.
He received advanced training in Germany, France and South Korea. He is licensed to do complex neuro Vascular procedures by Boston Scientific Corporation, Stryker, Medtronic and Terumo Corporation.
He is a proctor for Boston Scientific Corporation, Stryker, Medtronic and Terumo Corporation and performs cases and trains doctors in the Asia Pacific region.
He has published close to 100 papers and he is the associate editor of the journal of clinical interventional radiology. He is a peer reviewer of several journals. He has written several chapters in textbooks and has delivered five national orations and several hundred lectures in India and abroad.
He is a member of the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, The Indian Society of Radiology and imaging, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe, the Vascular Society of India, the Association of Surgeons of India and the Indian Medical Association.
He is one of the most senior interventional radiologists in India and has trained more than 20 interventional radiologists in India and abroad.
