The breast center at KMCH was started in 2013 and is the vision of the KMCH Chairman, Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami. The center was started to cater to women in this part of Tamil Nadu who have breast-related problems to have the most up-to-date information, treatment, and support.

Breast Solutions Provider

The breast center at KMCH is a comprehensive solution provider for any breast-related problems. Led by Dr. Rupa Renganathan, the center is an all-encompassing solution provider for breast-related issues. The center not only diagnoses the condition but also ensures that treatment is planned according to the current scientific norms. The center also performs several pinhole procedures to diagnose breast-related conditions and also treat non-cancerous breast lumps and infections. The center has up-to-date technology in terms of 3D Mammography – Tomosynthesis with contrast-enhanced mammography (the first in India), an Ultrasound system with real-time Shear Wave Elastography and 3D imaging, 3 Tesla MRI and PET scan and vacuum-assisted biopsy system.

It is one of the centers in India to be recognized for fellowship training in breast imaging by the national board. From counseling to screening and diagnosis to treatment, the breast center at KMCH brings together breast specialists and new technologies to ensure that you are provided with information and care on par with current international standards and guidelines.

Why 3D Mammography?

The ONLY mammogram with multiple clinically proven studies, shown to detect more invasive cancers, compared to 2D mammography alone.§ The 3D Mammography exam is the only one clinically proven, with numerous studies, to be more accurate than 2D mammograms, detecting 20-65% more invasive cancers.§ The 3D Mammography exam reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.1,2 It is also the only breast tomosynthesis exam U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.2,3

The study found an average 41% increase and that 1.2 (95% CI: 0.8-1.6) additional invasive breast cancers per 1000 screening exams were found in women receiving combined 2D FFDM and 3D™ mammograms acquired with the Hologic 3D Mammography™ System versus women receiving 2D FFDM mammograms only.

Favorable outcomes through a pinhole for tumors

Vacuum-assisted excision is currently popular, and one of the safest technologies across the globe to remove benign breast lumps called fibroadenoma in the breast. This is a simple pinhole procedure done under local anesthesia which leaves no scar.

A small needle is inserted through a pinhole into the breast and lumps up to 4cm are removed almost painlessly. The procedure does not require hospital admission and the patient is discharged with a small bandage which can be removed after two days. This pinhole surgery is useful, especially for young unmarried girls where even multiple non-cancerous lumps can be removed in the same sitting.
